Margate Place Guesthouse

This past weekend, we enjoyed an unforgettable half-day boat ride with the Raggy Charters crew. The weather was perfect with warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. With easy access to multiple viewing spots on the lower and upper deck, we had front-row seats to spot some amazing wildlife.

Pods of playful common dolphins swam alongside us, leaping gracefully through the water. We even caught sight of a baby and mother humpback whale showing off with dramatic breaches, and bottlenose dolphins playfully swimming alongside our boat. St. Croix Island, home to Africa’s largest breeding colony of endangered African penguins, was a true highlight. These resilient birds are making a slow comeback after a devastating 1940’s mining operation stripped the island’s resources.

In the early afternoon we enjoyed a delicious snack provided by the crew. Nearby, we admired the replica of Bartholomew Dias’ cross, originally erected in 1488, adding a fascinating historical layer to the majestic landscape of the Island. This was a trip well worth it, gaining another perspective of the ocean wildlife on our doorstep.
